Sir, - I must heartily commend Fintan O’Toole on his meaningful and perceptive opinion piece (“Odysseus is all around us, not just on the cinema screens”, Opinion. July 21). The epic poem, The Odyssey, offers us many insights. One of the more important themes is to remind us of our duty to give succor to the strangers in our midst, regardless of how the stranger comes to us. It made this epic poem alive and relevant in our 21st century. Odysseus becomes not a heroic, epic warrior but an ordinary person trying to survive in the world. An everyman. O’Toole’s final paragraphs where he sees Odysseus as the “archetypal stranger, the refugee, the foreigner….the tramp” are particularly striking and echo the recent words of Pope Leo in Gran Canaria, when he said that “human dignity has no passport”.
