A 10-year-old boy is being treated at the children’s intensive care unit of a hospital in Patra, western Greece, after he was found unresponsive in the sea.

The incident took place on Friday afternoon, when bathers at the beach of Marathia in Ilia, realized the boy had lost consciousness while swimming and pulled him out of the sea. He was provided with first aid until an ambulance arrived to transfer him initially to Amaliada General Hospital.

From there, the boy was sent to Pyrgos General Hospital for further medical treatment and finally to Patra, where he remains. No further details were available about his status.

A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Kyllini Port Authority.
