A 17-year-old tourist was recovered dead Friday afternoon from the sea off Kladissos in Hania, Crete.
The teenager had been swimming when he disappeared from view of a friend who was with him at the beach for reasons that remain unclear.
A search operation was launched involving two Coast Guard vessels, a Frontex patrol boat and nearby civilian boats.
Lifeguards later located the boy at sea and brought him ashore unconscious.
He was taken by ambulance to Hania General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
