Three people have drowned in one day while swimming off popular beaches in various parts of the country, authorities said.
The Coast Guard said a 67-year-old Greek man was found unconscious at a beach near Halkida, on the central island of Evia early Tuesday and was pronounced dead in hospital.
On western Crete, a 75-year-old German tourist died swimming near Georgioupoli, despite efforts by a lifeguard to resuscitate him, and in the northern Halkidiki peninsula a 73-year-old Greek woman drowned near Poseidi.
According to research presented last summer, Greece has a drowning death rate of 3.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, with an average 357 deaths per per year during leisure activities at the sea or in lakes, rivers and swimming pools between 2020-2024.
Most victims – 81% – are aged over 60, while the greatest number of deaths was recorded in the month of July.
