Greek health authorities have reminded residents and visitors that swimming remains prohibited in several coastal areas of the Attica region, including parts of the Athens metropolitan area, where water quality does not meet required safety standards.
Deputy Health Minister Irini Agapidaki issued a directive outlining restricted areas to protect public health. The ban applies to ports, shipyards and other industrial coastal zones, as well as sections of shoreline near Piraeus, Perama, Skaramangas, Aspropyrgos, Lavrio and Rafina.
Authorities have also prohibited swimming within designated distances of wastewater outlets, stormwater drains and other potential sources of pollution, including areas near the Asopos River estuary, north of Athens.
Regional health and environmental authorities were instructed to work with municipalities and port officials to enforce the restrictions, install warning signs and monitor affected beaches. The ministry urged continued water testing and inspections of possible pollution sources.
Officials said the restrictions are not permanent and may be revised depending on changing coastal conditions and the results of ongoing environmental monitoring.
