Greek authorities have banned swimming at several beaches in the Attica region, warning that pollution levels make the waters dangerous for public health.
The restriction applies to coastal areas located near ports, shipyards and industrial zones, including areas around Piraeus, Aspropyrgos, Lavrio and Rafina. Many of these beaches have traditionally been used by local residents and visitors because they offer free access.
The Health Ministry ordered the placement of signs informing people about the swimming ban, while police units have been assigned to monitor compliance.
According to the ministry, the affected waters are polluted and pose a risk to people’s health.
The measure comes as Greek authorities continue inspections of businesses on the islands following numerous complaints from tourists about poor service quality.
