A climber who fell into a ravine on Mount Olympus in northern Greece early Saturday was found dead during a rescue operation.

The victim, a Polish man believed to be around 40 years old, was recovered and transferred to a lower-altitude shelter. He was then flown by helicopter to Larissa Airport, where an ambulance was waiting to take him to a hospital for the required medical and forensic procedures.

Authorities were alerted shortly after midday and dispatched search-and-rescue teams to the scene, an area reportedly difficult to access at an altitude of around 2,900 meters, just below the mountain’s highest peak.
