A 39-year-old climber was found dead after becoming trapped in the Tryfos Gorge near Vonitsa in western Greece during a canyoning expedition, the fire service said Thursday.
A second member of the group was rescued unharmed following an overnight operation in the rugged terrain.
Authorities said emergency services were alerted Wednesday night after one of the men called the European emergency number, 112, to report the accident. Firefighters, police and specialized rescue teams were dispatched to the scene.
After a demanding overnight rescue effort, crews succeeded in reaching and extracting the surviving man. The second climber was later found dead. The circumstances of the accident were not immediately clear.
