A rescue operation was underway Saturday on Mount Olympus after a 64-year-old hiker lost consciousness while trekking in the area, authorities said.

The man, who was part of a three-member hiking group, collapsed on a trail near the Spilios Agapitos mountain refuge. Fellow hikers immediately carried him to the refuge, where emergency services were later notified.

The Fire Service Operations Center was alerted shortly after 2 p.m., prompting the mobilization of rescue crews. The operation’s objective is to safely transport the 64-year-old to an accessible location where he can be taken by ambulance to receive medical care.

Twelve firefighters from the Litochoro and Katerini services are participating in the rescue effort, with assistance from an EMAK disaster response team.
