A 66-year-old woman was rescued after being injured while hiking on Mount Olympus in northern Greece, following an overnight operation involving firefighters and a specialized mountain rescue unit, authorities said Friday.
The Fire Service said it was alerted shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday that a woman had been injured on a hiking trail near the Spilios Agapitos mountain refuge at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters.
The woman was part of a group of four hikers when she was injured, authorities said. Following an emergency call to Greece’s 112 emergency number, 12 firefighters and members of the search and rescue team of the EMAK disaster response unit were dispatched to the area.
Rescuers located the injured hiker, reached her on foot and carried her on a stretcher to the Prionia area, where she was transferred to an ambulance operated by the National Emergency Aid Center (EKAB).
