A 21-year-old man was seriously injured after falling into a steep, hard-to-reach section of Milopotamos Gorge on the north Aegean island of Ikaria while hiking on Monday.
He was hiking with another person when the accident occurred under circumstances that were not immediately clear.
Following an emergency call, eight firefighters with four vehicles from the Ikaria Fire Station launched a rescue operation.
Rescuers reached the injured hiker in the gorge, secured him on a specialized stretcher and carried him to a safe location, where he was transferred to an ambulance operated by Greece’s national emergency medical service, EKAB, for transport to hospital. The second hiker was not reported injured.
