A 33-year-old man was rescued Monday after becoming stranded atop a roughly 20-meter rock at Firiplaka beach on the Aegean island of Milos, authorities said.

According to the Greek Coast Guard, the man had climbed onto the rock, which rises from the sea, but realized he could not safely descend.

The Milos Port Authority launched a rescue operation involving coast guard and police officers, firefighters, health center staff and private lifeguards.

Rescuers found the man in good health but unable to climb down. Using ropes, they safely lowered him from the rock.
