The first two new Alstom electric trains have entered regular passenger service in Bulgaria, with BDZ deploying the modern multiple units on several routes from today.
The trains are currently operating on the Plovdiv-Svilengrad, Plovdiv-Asenovgrad, Svilengrad-Sofia and Sofia-Pernik routes. As more trains are delivered, the new units will gradually be introduced on additional routes across the country.
The first journey of one of the new trains was made on the Plovdiv-Svilengrad route, departing from Plovdiv railway station at 5:30 a.m.
The Alstom Coradia Stream trains are being delivered under a contract between the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the BULEMU consortium, financed through Bulgaria's Recovery and Resilience Plan. The agreement covers 35 single-deck, zero-emission electric multiple units, as well as their maintenance for 15 years. Its total value is approximately 452 million euros.
By the end of August, 12 of the 35 trains had been delivered to Bulgaria. The remaining 23 units are scheduled to arrive in stages through April 2027. The 12 trains already delivered have a combined value of nearly 155 million euros.
