New Škoda electric trains are entering service on Bulgaria's railway network, marking what the Transport Ministry describes as the country's largest renewal of its rail fleet in more than two decades.
One of the new trains was presented at Sofia Central Railway Station in the presence of Transport Minister Georgi Peev, with the first services scheduled to begin today. A total of 20 electric trainsets will be introduced gradually on some of Bulgaria's main and busiest railway routes.
The new trains are equipped with modern safety systems and are designed to provide passengers with a higher level of comfort. Their total cost exceeds 260 million euros, excluding VAT.
Peev said eight of the trains are expected to begin operating immediately, with all 20 planned to enter service by August 20. The minister also said Bulgaria's railway fleet will receive further additions in the coming weeks.
"Today, 8 of the trains will depart. It is expected that all of them will start operations by August 20. At the beginning of September, we will have a total of 60 new trains," Peev said.
