— Says petrol can sell for N200/litre, insists Nigerians must feel country’s energy wealth
Former Cross River State governor and presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Donald Duke, has dismissed Nigeria’s petrol subsidy debate as a “scam,” saying petrol could sell for about N200 per litre if the country properly harnesses its crude oil resources and other energy sources.
Duke’s position comes against the backdrop of differing positions by President Bola Tinubu and former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi on the future of petrol subsidy and how to address the country’s high cost of living.
While Tinubu abolished the petrol subsidy in May 2023 and has defended the policy as necessary to redirect public funds to development, Atiku has advocated a targeted subsidy, while Obi has supported subsidy removal with the savings transparently invested in productive and social sectors.
