The presidency has again faulted the position of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who has pledged to restore petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said Atiku’s position shows that he either lacks a basic understanding of the policy he is proposing or is deliberately playing politics with the Tinubu administration’s decision to remove petrol subsidy
Mr Onanuga said the subsidy removal had significantly improved the fiscal position of the three tiers of government and helped stabilise the macroeconomic environment.
He stated this in a statement on Wednesday in response to Atiku’s latest position on petrol subsidy. Atiku, a former vice president, had proposed a “targeted subsidy” to make transportation more affordable and accessible to Nigerians if elected president.
PREMIUM had earlier reported that Atiku said he believed the progress and wealth of a country should be measured by citizens’ ability to purchase goods and services, rather than by how much revenue the government collects.
