Health and safety inspectors have seized a total of nearly 6.2 tons of meat believed to be unfit for human consumption in a western Athens packaging plant and traced shipments to a series of restaurants, authorities said Tuesday.
The Greater Athens regional authority said the crackdown started from a plant in the suburb of Ilion. Inspectors found that the company that was supposed to operate the plant had ceased operations; in its place was a different company that lacked the necessary operating permits and approval from food safety authorities.
The six tons of meat found on the premises had no legal documentation.
Products from the plant were traced to 20 food outlets across the Greater Athens region, where a further 151 kilograms of meat were confiscated.
Attica regional governor Nikos Hardalias noted that during his term, which started in January 2024, hundreds of tons of products that could endanger public health had been confiscated.
