Food safety inspectors have widened their investigation into a salmonella outbreak that sickened nine people after they ate at the same food establishment in the western Athens suburb of Peristeri over the weekend.

An inspection of the premises in question by the Attica Regional Authority found no grounds to justify seizing products from the business, Kathimerini understands.

Investigators found that the establishment does not prepare the food it serves but instead purchases key products, including gyros meat, from external suppliers. Those suppliers are now expected to come under scrutiny as authorities seek to identify the source of the contamination.

Following the outbreak, the business carried out a full disinfection of its premises using specialized equipment.

The investigation will continue under the supervision of the National Public Health Organization (EODY), which is working to determine the exact source of the salmonella infections.
