A complaint over alleged food poisoning at a restaurant meal has led to authorities in the Greater Athens region seizing 5.3 tons of meat unfit for human consumption and moving to shutter the wholesaler that provided it.

The Attica regional authority said in a statement that following the complaint the meat was traced to a processing company based in the capital’s northern suburbs, where an inspection revealed allegedly extensive breaches of health and safety standards.

It said the “severe violations” included freezing and storage conditions, and fines would be imposed, while a recommendation would be made to temporarily close down the company.

The statement added that an extra 300 kilos of meat products from the same company were confiscated at the port of Piraeus that are believed to have been destined for hotels on the Aegean Sea islands, and another 500 kilos on the eastern island of Chios.
