At least 16 people were treated at Lamia General Hospital over the weekend after showing symptoms consistent with salmonella infection, including diarrhea, vomiting and fever, local authorities said.
Four patients were admitted and remain hospitalized, according to local reports. The patients said they had eaten at various food establishments in the Lamia area, raising concerns that the outbreak may be linked to a contaminated batch of food distributed to multiple businesses, possibly chicken from a common supplier.
Lamia General Hospital confirmed the presence of salmonella through laboratory testing and notified the National Public Health Organization (EODY), which informed local public health authorities in the regional unit of Fthiotida.
Health officials are expected to begin inspections of restaurants in the area to identify the source of the contamination and prevent further cases.
