Over 237 tons of mature cheese were transported from Lesvos in the first week of the partial lifting of restrictions imposed for the foot-and-mouth disease that broke out on the island in March.

From May 5 to 11, Lesvos exported domestically the following Greek cheese typess: 175 tons of feta, 26 tons of ladotyri, 30 tons of kasseri, 5 tons of graviera, and 1.5 tons of kefalotyri. The restart of exports follows detailed guidelines in the biosafety guide for milk and dairy products in areas with the foot-and-mouth disease.

The regional division of the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) is responsible for supervision of the transport of cheeses outside the restricted zone, and it is in direct communication with the Ministry of Rural Development & Food and the EFET headquarters.
