Feta cheese production is expected to decrease by 15,000 tons this year, due to fewer deliveries of goat and sheep milk.
Τhis is due to the great devastation to the country’s livestock, mainly from the smallpox epidemic and from the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Lesvos.
According to the president of the Interprofessional Feta Organization, Michalis Sarantis and former head of ‘Hellenic Dairies,’ sheep milk deliveries are expected to be lower this year by 60,000-70,000 tons, translating into a 10% drop in feta production.
On an annual basis feta production in Greece comes to 140,000 tons, of which 105,000 tons are exported.
