European Union authorities warn that the foot-and-mouth virus that struck mostly goats and sheep on the Greek island of Lesvos is still active and in danger of spreading further.

As of Tuesday, there have been 79 foot-and-mouth cases on Lesvos, a number higher than in similar outbreaks across the EU. The first case was detected March 16.

Similar cases last year in Germany, Hungary and Slovakia seem to have been detected at an earlier stage and bans on herd movements strictly enforced, hence the more limited number of cases.

Hungary and Slovakia went beyond EU protocols, with an immunization program. EU experts have counseled Greece to do the same.
