MK Party supporters were outside the Western Cape High Court, which heard arguments by lawyers representing President Cyril Ramaphosa, political parties and the impeachment committee as he seeks to interdict the committee.

The Western Cape High Court was packed on Wednesday morning as lawyers for President Cyril Ramaphosa, political parties and the impeachment committee made their arguments as the bench heard Ramaphosa’s interdict.

Ramaphosa seeks to interdict the committee from proceeding until after the review of the independent panel report on Phala Phala is heard. The review is expected to be heard in September.

In May 2026, the Constitutional Court handed down judgment in an application brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African Transformation Movement (ATM) regarding the Phala Phala controversy. The judgment found that Rule 129 (i) of the National Assembly, which allowed Parliament to vote against adopting the findings of an independent Section 89 panel, was invalid.

The morning started with Ramaphosa’s lawyer, Advocate Wim Trengove SC, setting out the president’s argument and responding to the arguments raised by the committee and political parties in their responding affidavits.
