Hurricane Kiko, packing winds in excess of 110 mph, is forecast to approach the Hawaiian islands early this week, but is predicted to pass to the north, meteorologists said Sunday.

Tropical Storm Kiko strengthened into a hurricane on Tuesday with 100 mph winds and attained Category 2 storm status, the National Hurricane Center reported.

Hurricane Kiko is expected to bring dangerous surf conditions to the waters off Hawaii by the end of the weekend.
