A sharp change in the weather is expected across Bulgaria over the weekend, with Friday’s heat giving way to rain, thunderstorms, hail and cooler air.
The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued a yellow warning for intense rainfall, thunderstorms and hail on Saturday, September 12, covering 13 districts in western and central Bulgaria. The warning applies to Montana, Vratsa, Lovech, Gabrovo, Plovdiv, Sofia-city, Sofia-region, Pazardzhik, Smolyan, Pernik, Kyustendil, Blagoevgrad and Veliko Tarnovo.
Locally, rainfall of up to 35 liters per square meter is expected. Temperatures will range from 26–28°C in northwestern Bulgaria to 32–34°C in the southeast, while Sofia will see a high of around 27°C.
Rain will continue overnight into Sunday and gradually spread toward the eastern parts of the country.
Sunday will be windy and cooler. Rain and thunderstorms will affect eastern Bulgaria before gradually weakening, while cloud cover will decrease in the west and allow for more sunshine.
