Sofia has reached the final of the European Capital of Tourism 2027 competition, becoming one of eight cities shortlisted after an independent assessment of 43 applications from 18 countries.

The Bulgarian capital is one of only two national capitals to make the final in the category for cities with more than 100,000 residents.

Sofia’s application was prepared by the Tourism Municipal Enterprise at Sofia Municipality, working with experts from different municipal structures, cultural institutions and partner organizations. The candidacy focuses on four areas: accessibility, sustainability, digitalization, and cultural heritage and creativity.

It highlights measures and results related to public transportation, cleaner air, open city data, digital services for visitors and the contemporary presentation of Sofia’s cultural heritage.

Mayor Vasil Terziev said he had supported the candidacy from the beginning because of his confidence in the city and its potential to present itself to an international audience.
