Burgas and Sofia have moved forward to the final stage of Bulgaria’s selection process to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, while Varna and Plovdiv have been eliminated after the completion of the first evaluation phase, BNT reported.
The first round focused on technical and infrastructure requirements set by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), including the suitability of the proposed venues and their ability to meet the production standards required for one of the world’s largest music events.
Bulgian National Television (BNT) Director General Milena Milotinova thanked all four municipalities for their efforts and preparation of their bids. In an official letter sent to the cities, she stressed that the decision was based only on the previously announced technical criteria, which were applied equally to all candidates.
"This decision is the result solely of the assessment according to the predetermined technical and infrastructure criteria, applied equally to all candidates. It does not question the undeniable qualities of the withdrawn cities and their established traditions in the field of music, culture and international festival events," Milotinova said.
She added that Varna and Plovdiv could still play a role in Eurovision-related activities through accompanying events, given their cultural traditions and experience in hosting major festivals.
