A British publication has named Sofia the most underrated capital city in Europe, praising Bulgaria's capital for its affordable prices, rich history, vibrant cultural scene, local cuisine, and easy access to nature.
In an article by Metro, the author says mentioning frequent trips to Bulgaria often surprises people, despite the country's growing popularity among British travelers. Bulgaria welcomed about 343,000 visitors from the United Kingdom in 2025, but that remains far below destinations such as Spain, which attracts around 18 million British tourists each year.
According to the publication, the growing crowds at Europe's traditional vacation hotspots are encouraging more travelers to seek quieter, more authentic destinations. Eastern Europe is increasingly benefiting from that trend, with Sofia emerging as one of the region's most appealing city breaks.
The article notes that while Sofia rarely appears on lists of Europe's must-visit capitals, it offers a combination of mountain scenery, welcoming locals, and remarkably low prices. Visitors, it says, can still find a beer for about £1.50, making the city one of the continent's most budget-friendly destinations.
Metro also highlights Sofia's historical and cultural landmarks. Among them is the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, recognized for its distinctive golden domes and listed as one of the world's largest Christian churches by internal volume. Other recommended attractions include the ancient Serdika archaeological complex, which can be visited free of charge, the Sofia City Art Gallery, the Museum of Illusions, and the water park near the capital.
