The lawyer for a woman remanded pending trial for alleged involvement in a deadly arson attack on a bank during an anti-austerity march 16 years ago said Friday he had tabled an appeal against her incarceration.
Costas Papadakis said his client had been jailed despite allegedly not being conclusively identified by police as a participant in the 2010 attack that killed three bank employees. He also argued that the decision to imprison the 46-year-old woman pending trial had a deleterious effect on the life of her five-year-old daughter.
An Athens panel of judges will rule on the appeal within the coming weeks.
The suspect, who was extradited from Britain where she had lived for years and remanded in prison Tuesday pending trial, has denied the charges. She claimed that while she took part in the May 5 demonstration she was not near the Marfin Bank branch on Stadiou Avenue at the time of the attack that’s been attributed to far-leftists.
She faces multiple charges of murder.
