Much of central and southern Greece, including the Greater Athens region and most of the Aegean Sea islands, face a high risk of wildfire Tuesday, according to civil protection forecasts.
Authorities said Monday that a category-4 threat on a five-notch scale would apply to Attica and the adjoining island of Evia, as well as Viotia and the northeastern Peloponnese, the southeastern Peloponnese, the Cyclades and the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Ikaria, Samos and Psara.
Most of the rest of central and southern Greece, including a U-shaped arc stretching from the island of Corfu in the northwest through Crete in the south to Thrace in the northeast, face a category-3 threat Tuesday.
