The Civil Protection Coordination Body met Friday evening, with the participation of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Evangelos Tournas, to review measures ahead of an expected extreme fire risk on Saturday.
The Greater Athens area and Evia, the island northeast of the capital, will be placed under Category 5 alert, indicating extreme fire danger. Several other regions will remain at Category 4, meaning very high fire risk.
Health authorities also urged citizens to take precautions, noting that wildfire smoke can affect areas far from the actual fire front as it is carried by winds. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay indoors, keep windows closed, ensure comfortable indoor temperatures and avoid unnecessary travel.
More than 70 wildfires were burning across Greece on Friday afternoon, with roughly two-thirds having broken out in the previous 24 hours, according to the Fire Brigade.
