Civil Protection authorities have issued an very high fire risk warning for Saturday, placing five of Greece’s 13 regions under an orange Category 4 alert, the second-highest level on the national scale, due to hot and dry conditions.
The regions affected are Attica, the Peloponnese, Central Greece (Evia, Fthiotida, Fokida and Viotia), the North Aegean (Chios and Lesvos) and Western Greece (Achaia and Ilia).
The Civil Protection agency urged the public to exercise extreme caution and follow all safety instructions in the event of a wildfire.
Authorities also warned against activities that could accidentally ignite fires, including lighting bonfires or barbecues, using machinery that produces sparks, handling beehives with smoke, or discarding lit cigarettes outdoors.
