Civil protection authorities were on high alert on Thursday due to an extreme threat of wildfire in five regions of Greece.
Attica, neighboring Viotia, the Argolid and Corinthia in the northeastern Peloponnese, and the islands of Evia and Lesvos were on a category-5 threat on Greece’s 5-notch scale, based on the daily Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.
A very high fire risk (Category 4) is also forecast for many parts of the country.
The threat is compounded by strong northerly winds which the Greek Meteorological Service warns will locally reach 8 on the Beaufort scale in the Aegean Sea.
