The southern regions of the country face a very high risk of fire on Monday
A new wildfire started on Monday in the Greek village of Kouvaras, 60 kilometres south-east of Athens, according to the Greek fire service.
The resources deployed to tackle the fire were gradually increased throughout the morning, with up to 172 firefighters and 41 vehicles mobilised at the time of writing, according to the fire service.
France and Romania, whose firefighters were pre-positioned at the start of the summer as part of the European civil protection programme, are already on the ground, with 23 firefighters and 4 vehicles from France, and 24 firefighters and 5 vehicles from Romania.
On Sunday, Greece’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection called on seven regions in the south of the country to remain on high alert after they were classified as facing a very high risk of fire (risk category 4) on the national fire risk forecast map.
