Firefighters battled two new summer wildfires in central and southern Greece Thursday, as for the first time since late July the fire risk forecast for most of the country was downgraded to between moderate and high.
Most of central and southern Greece, as well as the islands and the northeastern region of Thrace were set at level 3 of a 5-notch wildfire threat scale for Friday, with the rest of the country at level 2.
The threat for the Greater Athens region, Attica and Evia was reduced from level 4 – very high – to level 3.
Three water-bombing aircraft were mobilised Thursday afternoon to help 24 firefighters on the ground address a blaze in farmland near the village of Krini, in the Farsala region of Thessaly, while civil protection authorities sent a push alert to phones in the area urging preparedness for a potential evacuation order.
