Azadeh (Masoumeh) Yaqoubi, a citizen arrested during the nationwide protests in January, has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison by the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad. According to a report by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the court convicted Yaqoubi on charges of “assembly and collusion to act against national security.” She is currently imprisoned in Mashhad’s Vakilabad Prison.
Security forces arrested Yaqoubi in Mashhad in February. Following an initial period of detention in solitary confinement at an Intelligence Ministry detention facility, she was transferred to Vakilabad Prison. HRANA previously noted that she was held in pre-trial detention in the prison’s quarantine ward for over four months without formal charges or a resolution of her legal status.
Yaqoubi suffers from Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition. Reports indicate that her health has severely deteriorated due to a lack of access to necessary medications and poor detention conditions. HRANA reported that she urgently requires specialized medical care and a colonoscopy, but prison authorities have blocked her transfer to an outside medical facility.
A source close to the Yaqoubi family stated that low-quality prison food and restrictions on purchasing essential supplies have exacerbated her illness. Her family has repeatedly appealed to judicial authorities to address her medical condition and legal status.
