An organised sweep of a mountainous region on the southern island of Crete has revealed 17 separate small marijuana farms and led to the arrest of one suspected drug grower, authorities said Wednesday.
A police statement said a total 143 cannabis plants up to three meters in height were discovered and uprooted during Tuesday’s operation in the municipalities of Rethymno, Anogeia and Mylopotamos.
Officers arrested a 38-year-old man in the Mylopotamos region who is believed to have been tending to a small plantation of nine cannabis trees. Another man was arrested on separate arms possession charges after two undeclared shotguns were found in his sheepfold.
Efforts were under way to locate and arrest people linked with the other marijuana farms.
