The head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, Advocate Andrea Johnson, is facing calls to step aside after Public Interest SA lodged a complaint with the Legal Practice Council over allegations arising from evidence before the Madlanga Commission.
Public Interest SA has referred embattled Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnson to the Legal Practice Council and called for her suspension, saying evidence before the Madlanga Commission raises serious questions about her fitness to hold office and the integrity of ongoing investigations.
The civil society organisation confirmed it lodged a formal complaint on Wednesday, seeking a disciplinary investigation into Johnson’s conduct following what it described as “damning concessions” made during proceedings before the commission.
“The complaint raises serious concerns regarding Johnson's fitness to continue practising as a legal practitioner and serving as South Africa's foremost anti-corruption prosecutor,” Public Interest SA said.
“We contend that aspects of her conduct are fundamentally incompatible with the ethical obligations imposed upon legal practitioners, her duties as an officer of the court, and the standards expected of the head of a specialised anti-corruption prosecuting body.”
