The Coimbatore Corporation has imposed a penalty of ₹4 lakh on four persons for illegally dumping waste in Singanallur.Based on a surprise inspection carried out in Singanallur early on Wednesday, Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja directed officials to impose a cumulative penalty of ₹4 lakh, levying ₹1 lakh each on those found responsible for creating garbage dumps.The Corporation said around 1,215 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste are generated daily across its 100 wards, comprising 835 metric tonnes of wet waste and 380 metric tonnes of dry waste. Wet waste is processed into compost at decentralised processing centres, while efforts are under way to achieve 100% door-to-door segregated waste collection.The civic body said awareness campaigns on source segregation and proper waste disposal are being carried out through pamphlets, rallies, banners, public announcements and wall paintings. It warned that stringent action, including penalties and legal proceedings, would be initiated against anyone found creating illegal garbage dumps within the city limits.
