The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has petitioned the Director of Municipal Administration, alleging that the Coimbatore Corporation had raised four half-yearly property tax demands a year for a property in Vadavalli, resulting in an excess tax demand over several years. In a representation submitted on June 3, the consumer body said the issue pertained to a property in Periyar Nagar, Vadavalli, assessed under Property Tax Assessment No. 162/036/900066.According to the petition, the Corporation’s demand register reflects four half-yearly property tax demands for every financial year from 2018-19 onwards. Under the property tax system, only two half-yearly demands are to be raised in a financial year. The organisation alleged that the additional entries had led to an incorrect and inflated tax demand being shown against the property for the past eight years. The property owner, a senior citizen, reportedly discovered the discrepancy while attempting to pay the property tax dues. The consumer body said the complainant had approached Corporation officials on multiple occasions seeking correction of the records so that the legitimate tax amount could be remitted. The petition stated that several representations had been submitted to the Corporation and that the complainant had also made repeated personal visits to the civic body’s offices. Complaints were additionally lodged through the online grievances redress system. However, no corrective action had been taken so far, the organisation alleged. It further claimed that complaints submitted through the online platform were closed as “resolved” without the tax demand being rectified or any explanation being furnished to the complainant. The consumer body said the failure to address the issue had prevented the property owner from remitting the correct tax dues and had caused hardship. It also questioned the manner in which public grievances were being handled, citing the closure of complaints without resolution.Seeking intervention, the Coimbatore Consumer Cause requested the Director of Municipal Administration to issue instructions to the concerned Corporation officials to verify the assessment records, rectify the alleged error in the demand register and enable the complainant to pay the correct property tax without further delay.
