Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja has directed officials to impose a ₹10,000 fine on a company for pasting advertisement posters near the Podanur Railway Station flyover on Friday, and warned that unauthorised advertisement boards, flex banners and posters across the city will be removed and violators penalised.In a statement, the Commissioner said advertisement boards, flex banners and posters placed without permission in public spaces, on road median barriers and on electric poles cause distraction to the public and motorists. Such unauthorised advertisements will be removed by the Corporation and action will be initiated against those responsible.The Commissioner said that under the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998, and Rules, 2023, individuals and organisations intending to display advertisements through hoardings, electronic display screens and advertising boards must apply to the Corporation at least 15 days in advance, pay the prescribed fee and obtain approval.Advertisements displayed without permission would attract penalties against both the advertisers and the printing agencies involved. Under Section 117-U of the Act, persons erecting unauthorised advertisement hoardings can face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of ₹20,000, or both. Those placing unauthorised flex banners and advertisement boards can face imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of up to ₹5,000, or both.During an inspection near the Podanur Railway Station flyover, a ₹10,000 fine was imposed on a company for pasting advertisement posters that distracted motorists.
