Unauthorised advertisement hoardings continue to be seen across Coimbatore city, particularly along major roads, flyovers, and busy junctions, despite repeated drives to remove them.

The Coimbatore Corporation said it has removed several hoardings erected without permission and issued notices to owners to regularise their displays.

K. Kathirmathiyon, member of the District Road Safety Committee, alleged that the Corporation does not have a clear record of the permissions granted, including their locations and sizes. He added that while removal drives are being carried out, offenders should face strict legal action under the relevant sections to prevent repeat violations. “Permissions should be issued in line with IRC norms and assessed from a road safety perspective, not merely as a source of revenue,” he said.

A senior official from the town planning section of the Coimbatore Corporation said the department has been conducting regular drives to remove illegal hoardings across the city, with each of the five zones overseen by an assistant town planning officer. The official said that in 2025 alone, 1,037 unauthorised hoardings were removed and their frames confiscated.

“We also inform the people who put up such hoardings to display the licence details, including dimensions and validity period, on the structure,” the official added. “We are also planning to integrate the permissions granted, along with the location and size of hoardings, into our GIS mapping software. This will allow officials to monitor whether advertisements are placed in permitted locations and conform to approved dimensions.”
