The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) imposed fines of a total ₹1.9 lakh on 241 individuals for violating solid waste management rules at major beaches, including the Marina and Besant Nagar, between January 15 and 17.

According to a press release, action was taken on individuals and shop owners who were found dumping garbage at public places along the city’s coastline.

The penalties were imposed through 26 monitoring teams, deployed across key beach locations, with individual fines of up to ₹5,000 levied under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.

During the four-day period from January 14 to 17, a total of 233.88 tonnes of solid waste was removed from all beaches within the Corporation limits.

The Corporation reiterated that dumping of waste, including plastic and food remnants, in public places and beaches is prohibited under prevailing rules.
