The body of a 69-year-old fisherman whose boat capsized a week ago off Epanomi, near Thessaloniki, was recovered Sunday afternoon from a coastal area near Korinos in Pieria, south of the city, according to local reports.

The Coast Guard said a private citizen spotted the body a few meters offshore and alerted authorities. The body, which was in an advanced state of decomposition, was recovered and taken to the General Hospital of Katerini, where the man’s relatives identified him early Monday.

The 69-year-old had gone fishing with his wife last Tuesday morning when their boat overturned under unclear circumstances. His wife was rescued by a private citizen after managing to reach the shore.

According to her statement to authorities, she had been swimming for several hours after the boat capsized before being found.
