A body was discovered Friday morning in the Loudias River, known locally as Mavroneri, in central Macedonia, near the area where two men have admitted they disposed of the body of a 54-year-old man, authorities said.

Police were immediately placed on alert following the discovery. Formal identification procedures are pending.

The remains were found close to the location referenced in the ongoing investigation into the killing of the 54-year-old man in the Malgara-Kymina area outside Thessaloniki. The victim’s body had not previously been recovered despite extensive searches.

One of the two accused men, 43, was ordered into pretrial detention Thursday following his testimony before an investigating magistrate and was transferred to prison. The second suspect, a 44-year-old alleged to be the physical perpetrator of the killing, requested and was granted a postponement of his testimony and is expected to appear Friday.

In his statement to investigators, the 43-year-old allegedly claimed the victim was killed over a pigeon theft dispute, saying he did not believe his co-accused would take a life over such an argument. He also reportedly said the 44-year-old shot the victim after a struggle over a firearm and that he later accompanied him in disposing of the body in the river.
