The body of a man was discovered in a mountainous area near Kozani in northern Greece on Sunday, raising speculation that it may belong to a 78-year-old man with dementia who disappeared earlier this month, authorities said. Official identification is still pending.

The elderly man had left his home in the village of Platanorevma for a walk on May 6 but never returned, prompting concern among relatives and local authorities.

Police subsequently issued a Silver Alert to raise public awareness of his disappearance and assist in the search effort.

A rescue operation involving police officers, volunteers and family members has been underway for days in the wider area in an effort to locate him.
