Three men detained earlier Wednesday in villages in southern Crete’s Messara region have been arrested in connection with the death of 49-year-old Alexandros Daskalakis from Apesokari, also in the island’s south, authorities said.
The suspects are accused of inflicting fatal bodily harm after allegedly beating Daskalakis to death with a shepherd’s crook.
Two men, aged 32 and 59, are accused of carrying out the attack, while a 57-year-old man – the father of the 32-year-old suspect – is being investigated for alleged moral instigation, with authorities examining whether he ordered the assault.
According to local media reports, Daskalakis had an ongoing dispute with the 57-year-old over allegations that the latter’s livestock repeatedly entered and damaged his fields.
The 32-year-old suspect also appears to be linked to a bullying-related suicide in 2015. Vangelis Giakoumakis, who was a 20-year-old student at the Dairy School of Ioannina, took his life after enduring months of reported sexual, physical and verbal abuse from a group of fellow students who, like him, hailed from Crete.
