One of more than a dozen suspects taken in for questioning over the death of a young man in the Athens district of Kallithea has allegedly confessed to stabbing the victim during a brawl late on Wednesday night.
Speaking to state broadcaster ERT on Thursday morning, police spokeswoman Konstantia Dimoglidou confirmed that the victim – whose identity has not been made public – was part of a group that became involved in a physical altercation with another group of several males in their late teens or early 20s on a public square and in surrounding streets in central Kallithea shortly after 11 p.m.
The brawling group scattered when the victim fell to the ground, bleeding from a stab wound in the chest area. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene and rushed him to the capital’s Ippokrateio Hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life.
Police responded quickly to reports of the violence on Wednesday night, rounding up suspects and questioning witnesses. A knife was also found near the scene of the stabbing and has been sent for forensic analysis, though Dimoglidou said a search is underway for a second possible weapon after the alleged perpetrator told investigators he threw the knife he used in the fight into a garbage bin.
