A brawl involving around 10 people left one dead in the southern Athens neighborhood of Kallithea late Wednesday, with investigators indicating that the violence may have been sparked by sports-related rivalries.
The victim has been identified only as a young male in his late teens or early 20s. He died of a stabbing injury at the capital’s Ippokrateio Hospital after being rushed in by an ambulance dispatched to the scene of the brawl.
Police have remanded 14 suspects in custody and made one arrest in connection with the incident, as investigations continue to determine the sequence of events leading up to the young man’s death.
According to eyewitness accounts, the violence erupted when a group of young men pulled up in a car at Kallithea’s main square on Wednesday night and started having words with another group of young men gathered on the square. A fight soon erupted, leading to the injury of the victim with a sharp object, possibly a knife.
